BOOME & CROCKETT CLUB
Rep or t of th a Hou a e Committ rr to ba Submitted at the Annual Meeting of the Club to be held on February 5th,
-1915. ;
To the President and Members •
of the Boone & Crockett Club;
Gentlemen:
Your House Committee begs to submit herewith
the following report:
Since the last annual meeting which was held on January 25 th, 1913, the monthly meetings of the Club were held in the Club Room in the C' lists Club Building, No.
50 East 41st Street, New York City, on the following dates On January 25th, 1913, Capt. Robert Bartlett gave a talk in the Auditorium of the Chemists Club on the
Peary North Pole Expedition.
On February 15th, 1912, there was a meeting at which several members of the Game Preservation Committee we e present and explained the work that was being done by that Comx i11es.
On March 38th, 1912, notice was sent out of a monthly meeting, but no special feature was arranged and no one but the Secretary of the House Committee attended.
On April 25th, 1912, Hr. Barnum Brown of the
Boone and Crockett Club Records (Mss 738), Archives and Special Collections. Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. University of Montana-Missoula.
. . — .... .^»ff’fri
Museum of Natural History gave a talk on the Red Deer River Country in Alberta.
Cn December 17th, 1912, Mr. V. Stefansson gave a talk on the Esquimaux of Coronation Gulf. This talk was given in the Auditorrum of the Chemists Club Building and members of the latter olub were invited to attend.
The average attendance of members at the monthly meetings during the last two years has not amounted to more than about ten,- this too inspite of the fact that printed notices have been sent in advance to each member of the Club informing the members of some particular feature, generally in the nature of an informal talk by some member on some expedition taken by him. The House Committee has been disappointed in the attendance at these monthly meet- j ing3 and for that reason recommends that the present lease of the Club Room be not renewed when it expires on May 1st, next. Not only i3 there a small attendance at the monthly meetings but the House Committee is informed that the Club Room has not been used at all by members on other days. However, if the Club Room should be given up when the present lease expires, some arrangement will have to be made for the care of the Club’s property in the Room.
This consists, among other things, of xhe follovo-ng:
1. A bookcase with the beginning of a library
on Bi? Game and kindred subjects;
o
Boone and Crockett Club Records (Mss 738), Archives and Special Collections. Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. University of Montana-Missoula.
2. Framed autograph letters of Daniel Boone and David Cisckett;
3. Five large wall maps;
4. Various old guns and other weapons;
5. Buffalo robe loaned by Mr. Winthrop Chanler
Besides this property at present in the Club
Room, there is other property belonging to the Club consisting principally of books which are in the possession of Dr, Alexander Lambert. There are also a number of guns presented to the Club at various times which are temporarily stored with the Zoological Society. One of the guns is an old gun which formerly belonged to Kit Carson. This gun was given or loaned to the Club by Mr. Theodore Roosevelt.
The House Committee suggests that the Club decide at the annual meeting whether or not the lease of the Club Room in the Chemists Club Building should be renewed or not, or refer the matter to the Executive Committee for decision.
Respectfully submitted,
Secretary House Committee
Boone & Crockett Club.

The nominating Committee respectfully reports that it has given careful consideration to the general situation in relation to nominations and the various classes of membership of the club, and that it-has deemed it desirable in connection with making the regular nominations for executive officers to make certain further recommendations to the club concerning Honorary Membership. It Is aware that Honorary members are elected by the Executive Committee end not by the club at large: but Is nevertheless of opinion that the Executive Committee would prefer to learn the views of the club before tailing action along the line which it desires to suggest. It therefore takes this method of obtaining such an expression of view. It calls to the club’s syt tent Ian that there have been four Honorary members, all nov/ deceased: Judge
Cat on, Mr. Barkman and Generals Sheridan and Sherman ♦ Meanwhile conditions here in the United States in relation to the shooting of large game have materially altered during the past fifteen to twenty years and will change in the future even more rapidly. Sportsmen must necessarily go further afield and large game shooting as also the protection of large game is year by year assuming more and more of an International aspect. Under these circumstances the committee have given consideration to the position taken by The Shikar Club and to the objects of that cIud as set forth in its annual. The committee calls the attention of the Boone & Crocket Club to the following expression of those objects:- that is: the recital by The Shikar Club of its cordial sympathy with the objects of its sister society known as "The Fauna" with which it has many members in ommon: to wit: the preservation of wild species within the British Empire and the bringing home, as they say, to their rulers of
Boone and Crockett Club Records (Mss 738), Archives and Special Collections. Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. University of Montana-Missoula.
. their responsibility in the atter*
The Shikar Club continuing recites among its objects: the
(
development of the social side of sport: the bringing together of camp fire friends - the old time hunter and the young aspirant: the maintaining of a standard of sportsmanship: the inculcating of a love of forest, mountain and desert, and of the knowledge of the habits of animals: the encouraging of the strenous pursuit 01 a wary and dangerous cpiary* the development of the instinct of a well devised approach and of the oatient retrieving of wounded animals*. These points as we. all know have occupied more and more of the attention of this club alsoo All these objects are similar to those of the Boone & Crocket Club* Indeed it is not too much to say that this club served as a model fo-r the Shikar Club. In one matter however the Shikar Club has recognized an opportunity which this club has neglected that is in electing to Honorary membership distinguished foreign sportsmen* Among them three of our own membership figure: our Secretary Mr. Grant, our associate member,
Dr* Kornaday and our first President, Mr. Roosevelt* Austria, Prance, Russia, Bohemia and Eoumania are also represented.
The nominating Committee therefore recommend that while not limiting the Honorary membership to foreigners, the Executive Committee should elect to such membership a certain number of others than Americans, distinguished in other parts of the 7/orld for adherence to the objects which, this club was founded to attain:— to the end that there shall arise more of an interchange of view upon and mutual assistance in subjects of common Interest, that such of our members as may pursue sport with the rifle in other countries may be brought more closely in relation with foreign sportsmen, and that the general Interest, without which the particular interest cannot be subserved, may be added.
Boone and Crockett Club Records (Mss 738), Archives and Special Collections. Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. University of Montana-Missoula.
I Che Nominating Committee therefore request the Club to recommend
to the Executive Committee that certain elections he made to Honorary Membership, to wit:
From among the present memhership of this Club, our former President, hr. Roosevelt, our associate member, the President of the American Museum of Natural History, Prof: Henry Fairfield Osborn, and
v ’
from our present list of active members, Col. William P. Pickett, one of our Vice-Presidents; and Dr. Daniel Giraud Elliot. And that the Executive Committee take up the question of increasing the Honorary membership by the selection and electing of a certain number of distinguished
foreign sportsmen not to exceed five in any year and in that connection
dub
that it consider the names of those who compose the Shikar^and any strict ly similar sporting clubs on the continent of Europe.
In regard to- the regular executive officers to be elected the nominating committee recommends the following names:
Tor President: Win Austin Wadsworth, of Geneseo, N. Y.
'or Vice-Presidents: Messrs. Arnold Hague, of Washington, D. C
Walter B. Dovereaux, of Colorado; Archibald Rogers, of New York. And (if the Club and Executive Committee shall look favorably on the recommendations concerning the Honorary Membership list) to fill the vacancies created by The transferring to that list of Messrs. Pickett and Roosevelt the nominating committee recommend the names of Messrs. George Bird Grin- nell and Mr. Madison Grant, both of New York as Vice-Presidents.
For Secretary, the nominating committee recommend Mr. Henry G. Gray, understanding that for a year Mr. Grant, who has been our efricient Secretary for so long, will act as Honorary Secretary and familiarize

Hr. Gray with the v/ork of his department.
For Treasurer: The nominating committee in view of the
refusal of Hr. C. Grant laFarge to accept a renomination recommend
Hr. 77. Redmond Cross.
To fill the vacancies on the Executive Committee of Messrs. Cross and Davison the nominating committee recommend Mr.George L. Harrison, Jr. and Mr. Winthrop Chanler.
All of which is respectfully submitted.

Report of Finance Committee to be Submitted at Annual Meeting of the Club on February 5th. 1915,

Tq__the President and Members of the Boone &
Gentlemen:
On behalf of the Finance Committee, I beg to submit herewith the following report:
The Finance Committee was created in thfe winter of 1911-1912 for the purpose of raising a fund to be used by the Game Preservation Committee of the Club in carrying out the work of that Committee.
On February 15th, 1912, an appeal for subscriptions was sent out by the Finance Committee to every member of the Club and to outsiders, who>
it was thought, might be interested in the work of the Game Preservation Committee. This appeal was accompanied by various documents, including copy of the report of the Game Preservation Committee for the year .1911. In response to this appeal the Finance Committee received subscriptions amounting to f.2,320.
About the first of May 1912 Dr, Lewis R. Morris resigned as Chairman of the Finance Committee
Boone and Crockett Club Records (Mss 738), Archives and Special Collections. Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. University of Montana-Missoula.
and I was appointed Chairman in hi3 place. After conference with various members of the Executive Committee and the Game Preservation Committee, I decided that before making any further attempts to raise money from outside sources I should make a further effort to get subscriptions from all or almost all of the members of the Club, even though some of the members could only afford to give a small contribution. At that time only about sixteen of the regular and associate members of the Club had made any contribution. It seemed to me that a much more forceful appeal could be made to outsiders if we could show them that every member of the Club had shown his interest by contributing something however small. Accordingly, in the first week of June I wrote a letter to every regular member of the Club and to some of the Associate Members asking for a subscription. In reply to these letters I have received $1,390., making the total subscriptions to date $3,710. Attached hereto 13 a list of the subscriptions to date. It appears from this list that subscriptions have been received from 51 members. The Finance Committee hopes that those members who have not yet made a contribution will do so at once as the Came Preservation Committee will soon be in need of funds. Most of the subscriptions are twenty-five dollar subscriptions, but there are some ten dollar subscriptions
Boone and Crockett Club Records (Mss 738), Archives and Special Collections. Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. University of Montana-Missoula.
and quite a number fifty dollar and one hundred dollar
sub3cription8. One member haa subscribed one thousand
/
dollars and three members two hundred and fifty dollars each.
Respectfully submitted,
Chairman Finance Committee Boone & Crockett Club.
