56285 Smithsonian. Fred E. Miller (1868-1936) accepted a position in 1898 as a clerk for the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Crow Reservation in southeast Montana. For almost 14 years, Miller lived among and photographed the Apsa?alooke (Crow) people, learned to speak the language, and was officially adopted into the nation.
